Picture To Pencil Sketch Biography

As a youngster, Rex Burnett liked to examine the tire tracks left in the dusty road by an occasional automobile passing through his native Boston, Arkansas.  He started drawing very early, filling the open spaces of his school books with car sketches.  As a teenager he studied the automotive ads in The Saturday Evening Post® and Colliers® magazines.  The pastel renderings of futuristic cars in Esquire® magazine by designer Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky intrigued Rex; yet it was the startling beauty of the innovative 1936 Cord 810 that elevated its legendary designer, Gordon M. Buehrig, to near sainthood in Burnett's mind.

Burnett's college study in engineering - with a minor in art - was interrupted by service in the Navy during World War II; his formal art education was limited to a still-life drawing class.

After the war, Burnett worked as a technical artist for Douglas Aircraft where he created complex illustrations for aircraft catalogs, manuals, and proposals.  Fellow artist George Stevens took note of Burnett's automotive sketches and introduced him to Gary Davis, future creator of the Davis Divan, a three-wheeled car.  Davis needed someone to conceive and draw a body style for his Davis car, so he hired Burnett to do the job.  Burnett's phantom drawing of the Davis Divan was published September 1948 in Hot Rod Magazine®.  After that, he made regular contributions to the magazine illustrating the "Hot Rod of the Month," while still working full-time in the aerospace industry.  He later created art for MOTOR TREND®, Auto®, and CYCLE® magazines.

HOW IT'S DONE
The source material for Burnett's automotive drawings were usually a small stack of black and white photographs of a car's components shot separately in pieces, in a garage or work space, prior to the car's assembly.  Following the principles of three-point perspective, Burnett used these photographs as reference material to "assemble" the car together as a pencil drawing on tracing paper.  Over his pencil drawing he laid down a sheet of vellum upon which he used a technical pen to make the final ink drawing.
Currently when you google the phrase "Diego Koi," the majority of the links thrown back have to do with koi ponds in San Diego. That situation is surely not long for this world (wide web). Self-taught Italian artist Diego Fazio, who goes by DiegoKoi on his Deviant Art page, is racking up major Google points as we speak. Why? Because with only a pencil and paper, he can do this:

Hat tip to BuzzFeed who brought our attention to the former tattoo artist's uber-real photorealistic drawings. According to a Google translation of Fazio's Deviant Art profile, the 22-year-old has an affinity for the artwork of Katsushika Hokusai, and off the page, women's eyes.
A 'pen picture' is what is traditionally called a short bio-sketch, or personal sketch. These kind of sketches appear on book jackets. They may be requested as part of an application process. To write the sketch, think about the most important and most interesting things about yourself such as:
your age
your sex - which does not have to be stated as "I am female" or male. You can often work it in a different way.
current marital status, and children
if unmarried, is there someone important in your life
are you a HS or college student
what is your top passion
what is your second-top passion
what are 5 of your interests
what are your top 2 goals
what do you really enjoy doing
what things do you most dislike
you can include something like disability IF you choose to do so, OR if you believe it says something in particular about you.
anything else 'very important' about you

The goal is to give a written 'mental picture' of yourself. Generally, the sketch is no more than 5 very short paragraphs, using 1 to 3 sentences per paragraph.

Example for HS Male
Wrestling has been my passion since 9th grade when I won 2nd place for XX High School's Wrestling Team. Now in my Senior year, I plan to attend Yale University next fall.

I help my parents care for my disabled step-brother who is 3 years younger than me. We enjoy camping at a small lake near our house. Each summer, the whole family, including my other brother, two step-sisters, and our dog, George, travel through the southwest. We all love the deserts, except George dislikes cacti.

I enjoy bowling and skateboarding with my friends and am learning archery. But volunteering for the Para-Olympics throughout the year is my passion.

George and I both dislike Country-Western music; I wish I could join him when he howls in response to it. I also advocate for people facing discrimination and bullying in my school. George and I were both adopted into our great family, he at age 2 and I at age 15 after I spent 5 years in foster care.
Although it appears the ship is about to take off into the distance, it is in fact the result of nothing but paper and pen.
A Dutch artist has created a series of 3D illustrations using a technique similar to airbrushing, making everything from planes to contorted faces pop out of the sheet.
Although he is a professionally schooled airbrush artist, Ramon Bruin's work with just pen and paper is what truly makes you question what is art and what is reality.

Mr Bruin often adds art supplies, pens and erasers or cleverly positioning his own hand in the photos to bring his illustrations to life.
The 31-year-old calls the technique ‘anamorphosis’ but has refused to give further details about how he creates the mind-boggling images.

‘Anamorphosis’, Bruin says, derives from airbrushing, a way of painting which he has used for over a decade.
'Airbrushing is a great technique for making paintings with depth and realism,' the 31-year-old freelance artist said in an interview with the New York Daily News last year.

‘The challenge is making anamorphic illustrations is to not only make the drawings look 3D, but that the pictures of the illustrations look 3D as well.
'This depth can only been seen from a certain angle. I also experimented with light and with the correct light it appeared the drawing came off the paper.'
Bruin developed the technique by studying airbrushing at the Airbrush Academie in Lelystad, The Netherlands, and continued through his own company, JJK Airbrush.
